چکیده
Submitted for the MAR14 Meeting of The American Physical Society Atomistic study of rejuvenation of amorphous metals via thermal loading MASATO WAKEDA, Osaka University, JUNJI SAIDA, Tohoku University, JU LI, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SHIGENOBU OGATA, Osaka University — Rejuvenation is the structural excitation of amorphous system accompanied by enthalpy and free volume rise, and it is one of the promising approaches for improving the deformability of amorphous metals, which usually exhibit macroscopic brittle fracture. However, methods for controlling the rejuvenation and feasibility conditions of the rejuvenation remain unclear because of few experimental evidences and lack of clear knowledge of nonequilibrium glass properties. In this study, we investigate a method to control the rejuvenation through thermal loading and the feasibility conditions of the thermal rejuvenation. Using molecular dynamics techniques, we constructed an amorphous alloy model via melt-quenching process, and then conducted annealing and quenching processes. It is observed that thermal rejuvenation occurs via a thermal loading process of annealing at temperatures above a critical value and subsequent quenching at a cooling rate that is higher than that of the initial melt-quenching process. The level of rejuvenation increases with increasing annealing temperature and quenching rate. We discuss the background nature of rejuvenation and potential application of thermal rejuvenation to control the mechanical properties of amorphous metals. Controlled Rejuvenation of Amorphous Metals with Thermal Processing
Rejuvenation is the configurational excitation of amorphous materials and is one of the more promising approaches for improving the deformability of amorphous metals that usually exhibit macroscopic brittle fracture modes. Here, we propose a method to control the level of rejuvenation through systematic thermal processing and clarify the crucial feasibility conditions by means of molecular dyna...
متن کاملTime scales and mechanisms of relaxation in the energy landscape of polymer glass under deformation: direct atomistic modeling.
Molecular-dynamics simulation is used to explore the influence of thermal and mechanical history of typical glassy polymers on their deformation. Polymer stress-strain and energy-strain developments have been followed for different deformation velocities, also in closed extension-recompression loops. The latter simulate for the first time the experimentally observed mechanical rejuvenation and ...
متن کاملAtomistic basis for the plastic yield criterion of metallic glass.
Because of their disordered atomic structure, amorphous metals (termed metallic glasses) have fundamentally different deformation mechanisms compared with polycrystalline metals. These different mechanisms give metallic glasses high strength, but the extent to which they affect other macroscopic deformation properties is uncertain. For example, the nature of the plastic-yield criterion is a poi...
متن کاملAtomistic Study of the Thermal Stress due to Twin Boundaries
There is compelling evidence for the critical role of twin boundaries in imparting the extraordinary combination of strength and ductility to nanotwinned metals. This paper presents a study of the thermal expansion of coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) at finite temperature by way of atomistic simulations. The simulations reveal that for all twin boundary spacings d, the thermal expansion induced ...
متن کاملCrystallization Kinetics Study in Al87Ni10La3 Amorphous Alloy
In this study, the crystallization behavior of melt-spun Al87Ni10La3 amorphous phase was investigated by using X-ray diffraction and non-isothermal differential thermal analysis techniques. The results demonstrated that the amorphous phase exhibited two-stage crystallization on heating, i.e., at first step the amorphous phase transforms into α-Al phase and at second step Al11La3 and Al3Ni inter...
